Time zone
Ramsgate boasts its unique Meridian Line, and beneath the harbor clock tower, an inscription declares that Ramsgate Mean Time is 5 minutes and 41 seconds ahead of Greenwich Mean Time. Although it's the only local time zone in the UK formally recognized by Greenwich, Ramsgate switched to GMT around 1928. Some events, like the Millennium celebration fireworks, occur 5 minutes and 41 seconds earlier than the rest of the country.
History
The Ramsgate Maritime Museum houses numerous artifacts representing the town's rich history of fishing, shipbuilding, and shipwrecks, and it's also where the Meridian is located. Four gallery exhibits narrate the maritime history of the area with permanent displays.
Take a tour of the Ramsgate Tunnels, a network of deep shelter tunnels connected to a former railway tunnel, built to provide refuge for 60,000 people during WWII. Explore the tunnels and experience how the locals lived in a town beneath a town.
For a different historical perspective, visit The Micro Museum, which tells the story of the evolution and ideas that led to the invention of the home computer. The museum boasts a unique collection of vintage personal computers, calculators, games, and microelectronics.
