Loughborough hotels, United Kingdom

History

Loughborough first appears in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it is recorded as a town with eight villagers, sixteen smallholders, and fifteen freemen among thirty-nine households—remarkably large for its time.

In 1841, a young cabinet maker named Thomas Cook selected Loughborough as the destination for the very first package tour, organized for a temperance group from Leicester.

The town is also home to John Taylor Bellfounders, the world's largest bell foundry, responsible for crafting bells for landmarks like York Minster and St. Paul's Cathedral in London.

Things to do

Loughborough and its neighboring areas offer more than just shopping and history. Train enthusiasts should visit the Great Central Railway, the only double-track mainline heritage railway in the UK. Witness vintage steam engines passing on the tracks or join themed events like a 1940s Sunday lunch or a murder mystery experience.

Just eight miles away, you’ll find Coalville, home to the Snibston Discovery Museum, an award-winning interactive museum focusing on science and technology, engineering, transport, fashion, history, and mining. Located in the former Snibston Colliery, it features seven interactive galleries, a children's outdoor play area, a water play area, a section for under 5s, a café, a shop, and a vintage traveling theater.

Venture where 2.4 million have ventured before at the National Space Center in Leicester, the UK's leading attraction for space science and astronomy. View one of the only known Soyuz spacecrafts in Western Europe, alongside six galleries of exhibits and activities covering space flight, astronomy, and cosmology. Amenities also include a three-dome cinema and planetarium, a gift shop, and a restaurant situated beneath the powerful nozzles of the Blue Streak and PGM-17 Thor rockets.
