Unesco city of film
Once a proud center of the textile industry, Bradford is now recognized for an entirely different local specialty. In 2009, Bradford was named the first UNESCO City of Film due to its rich filmmaking heritage. If you're into visual arts, especially photography, the National Media Museum is a must-visit.
The museum boasts seven floors of galleries with impressive permanent exhibitions focusing on photography, television, animation, video gaming, and the internet. With three cinemas and an IMAX screen, you can easily spend an entire day exploring this amazing institution, especially if one of the two annual film festivals is happening.
City park
Bradford's revitalized city center also houses the impressive City Park. It's a wonderful place to sit back and enjoy your surroundings, which include a captivating high-tech water feature that's the largest structure of its kind in the UK.
The city's proud film scene is further highlighted at the Impressions Gallery, one of the nation's most cutting-edge photographic galleries. For more artistic enjoyment, Cartwright Hall, located on the city's outskirts, offers an excellent collection of 19th and 20th-century British art, featuring some remarkable L.S. Lowry paintings.
Spice city
Home to one of the largest South Asian communities in the UK, Bradford has earned the title of 'Curry Capital of Britain' three years in a row. Before you leave, you must discover why the city has received this well-deserved recognition so often.
Bradford is dotted with fantastic curry houses, making it challenging to choose the best one. You'll appreciate the traditional ambiance of Karachi, one of the city's original curry cafés that has more than stood the test of time. For a more formal dining experience, Prashad, a finalist on Channel 4's Ramsay's Best Restaurant, promises a delightful meal. The staff is lovely, and the aloo gobi is amazing.
Saltaire
As if there weren’t enough attractions, Bradford is right next to the Saltaire World Heritage Site. Not only is Saltaire a stunning Victorian village, but there's also plenty to do here. You can find world-class art on display at the Salts Mill, including one of the largest collections of works by David Hockney.
Another treat not to miss is the Shipley Glen tramway. Built in 1895, the tram offers a charming route through lush woods and up a steep hill to Shipley Glen, providing even more incredible views.
Leeds and the Pennines
A Bradford hotel makes a wonderful base for visiting the city of Leeds, just a short train ride away. Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the picturesque walks available in the Pennines, the beautiful hills surrounding the city. However, you may not find time to lace up those hiking boots, as there's so much to explore in this captivating city.
